Table lamps can be functional or decorative, or both. Companies are dedicating whole design teams to new and improved lighting, with innovative, energy efficient and chic lighting designs hitting the market all the time.
Interior designers today are offered infinite options to suit the decor or the mood of each room they are fitting out. Both contemporary and traditional styles of table lamps are widely available from a variety of sources, both online and in your local shopping centre.
In your local electrical retailer, a whole section may be devoted to lamps and lighting. Some companies dedicate themselves to creating a range of table lamps as functional works of art to appeal to many different tastes.
More contemporary styles of table lamps include bases of brushed steel or nickel finish, a square frame with a window in it, solid brass or bronze with a swinging arm, to tiered shapes and many others. Traditional styles are most likely to include a floral lamp shade and brass-coloured base designed in a plain or scalloped fashion. For the more masculine traditional ones it is more likely to include a dark or burgundy shade and a square, more solid base.
Lava Lamps became a defining feature in the 1960′s. These lamps feature a unique tapered glass cylinder holding thickened water and slightly liquified wax. Switching on the lamp causes the wax to become heated, so its density is decreased therefore making it lighter so it floats. The wax floats to the top of the lamp, where it then cools down and drops back to the bottom, where it lands on the coils specifically placed there to disperse the wax and heat it again. The appearance of the ‘lava’ is further enhanced by the colourful appearance of the liquids.
The big rage in the 1980′s was the Plasma Lamp. Also known as a nebula sphere, or a lightning ball, these lamps offer a unique display of electrical currents enclosed in glass. A finger touching the outside of the glass changes the actions of the electrical currents and gases within the globe, seeming to draw the light to it.
Designed mostly for their aesthetic appeal rather than the light that they put out, Lava Lamps and Plasma Lamps are not so popular today. Therefore the price has come down, and they are not stocked in so many places. Many people like their table lamps to offer both functionality and decorative appeal today.
