Displaying artwork in the home is an important part of setting the atmosphere of a room, which can create wonderful talking and focal points. Mindful of this, selecting the right picture lights to show the artwork at its best is important. This does require a certain amount of though and consideration however.
Even lighting: To bring out an artwork’s images to the best, creating a nice even light is important. This is favorably achieved from above, with a central position and where the light fitting does not extend beyond the picture itself.
Light the medium: Picture lights should be in keeping with the medium which has been used to produce the picture. Modern acrylics for example need lots of light, and the rich an vibrant tones can handle this. Whereas watercolors need much less, sympathetically bringing out the colors, with the delicate nature of the stroke.
Picture lights should also be in keeping with the size of the artwork. Small pieces will need no more than one spotlight upon them, whilst the same may also be the case for medium sized works. Using multiple lights should be reserved for larger pictures, where clear areas fall out of the natural light shadow.
Natural light: Whilst artificial light can fade pictures, this can be controlled regards how long they are on through the day and the wattage used. Less controllable is natural light, which can be very damaging. As such, displaying away from natural sources at all times is advisable.
Another constant issue when lighting pictures regards reflections if the artwork is behind glass. These can be controlled by changing the angle of the lighting, so this should be thoroughly experimented with before fittings are securely fixed in place.
Have you looked at those picture lights? They are wonderful. The wall picture lights can easily be placed on your wall. It’s an instant change of scenery and is wonderful to see.
