How Reed Diffusers Work

What are reed diffusers? How do they work? While in Bath & Body Works, I stared at those little reed sticks and convinced myself there’s no way they could work better than candles. Candles smell the second they’re lit. WallFlowers produce scent the second you plug them in. Reed diffusers just sit there and don’t ‘do’ anything.

Just in case I was missing something, I decided to learn a little about reed diffusers. The components are very simple. A reed diffuser has only 3 components – the bottle, the reed wicks, often called ‘sticks’, and the diffuser oil. Each of these items can be replaced, although it’s doubtful you’ll need to worry about the bottle unless you break it.

Reed wicks vary from 6 to 15 inches long and 2 to 5 mm thick. According to recent studies, the optimal length for ‘scent throw’ is 12 inches and the optimal width is 3 mm. If you purchased a reed diffuser set and it didn’t live up to your expectations, either the reed wicks are the wrong size or the fragrance oil is inferior quality.

Buy the best quality diffuser oils you can find. If you can’t smell the fragrance in the bottle, you won’t be able to smell it coming from the reeds. The output of reed diffusers is limited by the quality of the diffuser oil. The oil is actually a mixture of reed diffuser base and fragrance oil. To sell their product cheap, some companies use very little fragrance. Low quality diffuser oil will smell mostly like chemicals.

Like anything else, with reed diffusers you get what you pay for. A $4 reed diffuser will produce the same results as buying a 50-cent candle at the dollar store. Buy the best you can find and you’ll see much better results! Smell the diffuser oil before you buy it. If the oil is sealed in a packaged gift set, don’t buy it. There’s a reason the manufacturer doesn’t want you being able to smell the diffuser oil.
