Glass lamp shades are often elevated to the status of art even though they are employed as a lighting appliance in the home. This is due to the aesthetic flexibility of glass, giving rise to visually-pleasing elements such as stained glass, wrought iron shapes, and interesting lamp profiles. The sentimental value of the shades is correspondingly higher than that of other household items, and many homeowners are loathe to part with a broken shade preferring instead to fix or restore it.
Fixing a broken glass lamp shade is indeed a commonplace demand due to the fragile nature of glass. Even the smallest crack in one spot can spread across the entire object and cause extensive damage. Some shades are made by piecing together many panes of glass, which only increases the likelihood that a piece becomes loose and falls off during the life time of the shade. Other types of damage can happen to the frame which holds the glass together.
Glass panes that have broken or fallen out of the framework need to be replaced. The ideal situation is if an identical lamp can be found which can be harvested for parts. The repairer or restorer would simply substitute the new pane into the old location and everything will be done. In practice, an identical lamp cannot be found. In such as a case, a glassworker’s skills are needed to produce a replica pane. Moreover, the restorer must now apply the right decorative paint or trim to match the old panes. In general smaller fragments are easier to replace because there is less material and less variation. A large piece of glass, on the other hand, can be decorated in many ways, and worse yet, can be curved in different directions (these are compound curves, e.g. in hurricane shades). Complex curves demand lots of manipulation of the glass piece during the firing process, and will cost a lot more.
In addition to the glass, the metal frame which houses all the lites and panes can be bent out of shape or broken altogether. Replacement of the metal is non-trivial given that the dimensions are usually very exacting to accommodate the thin panes. Sometimes the frame must be soldered for repair.
There can also be glass lamp shades that are impossible to repair. For example, a single-piece lamp shade that shatters into many medium-sized pieces is not repairable short of remaking it. If the breakage is isolated to some part of the shade, it may be possible to salvage the shade by making an alteration that renders the breakage moot. For example, by cutting off the entire top half of a lamp to remove a breakage near the top.
