Although it seems very insignificant to us now, it was once the most important invention of its time. It has come a long way in improving over the years and recently even more so with the new changes for clean energy. One thing is certain, it may be an invention that is taken for granted, but we do not want to live without it even for brief periods of time, we often keep large quantities on hand in case of the need for replacement. The development of an effective bulb was the beginning of a race against time for several people. Historians Israel and Friedel reported that twenty-two developers were actually involved in its making prior to Thomas Edison. Another Historian; Robert Hughes believes that even though it was not actually his own invention, Edison received credit for its invention due to the fact that he created the electric lighting system.
Although not the true inventor, Edisons version was an improvement to the others for several reasons. He improved upon the incandescent material (that which emits the light), the vacuum inside the lamp, and the resistance. Edisons version was the first version to be economical as well. He continued making improvements and filed for a United stated patent for a bulb that could last for nearly forty hours in 1879.
Bulbs were originally knows as lamps. Their improvements over time has been astonishing, and there is a large selection to choose from now. The incandescent operation is actually very simple, the current passes through a material (filament) which emits the light when heated. New lamps are much more efficient and economical than those in the past.
Fluorescent lighting is much different, and its compact bulb version has become one of the most common and economically used bulbs in the past few years due to energy efficiency. The tube of the bulb acts as its vacuum and is coated with phosphor which is the actual fluorescent part of the process. A small amount of mercury is used inside the tube. The process actually works by the absorption of electromagnetic radiation on a different wavelength, which emits light.
Light Emitting Diode (LED) lamps are another form of more economical lighting. These bulbs have also been used to replace the incandescent. The LED is a little more efficient in power than the fluorescent. An LED lamp using light emitting diodes as its source for light. The light output for each diode is small, and that is why it is necessary for there to be several grouped together for a larger emission. Heat management is build in with the LED bulbs to prevent their being damaged by becoming too hot.
Let us all give credit to everyone involved in the development of the past bulb and the new advancements that have been made. Nights would be very different without them. Thank you science for the bulb and all that it has brought to our lives.
