Designing Your Own Beaded Lamp Shades

Beaded lamp shades are a common decorative style for home lighting. The reason is this trim is one of the few materials that can be attached to glass. In contrast, fabric can be sewn, glued, or marked with coloring. The hardness and the high melting temperature means that there are much fewer ways to alter the outer surface with decoration.

There are two other ways of decorating that are appropriate for glass. The first of these is to use an adhesive agent like cement or glue to bind decorations and other kinds of trim to the surface. Use a pencil to mark out outlines for where to put all the trim. The resulting products are known as beaded lamp shades.

The alternative to beading is to paint the glass surface but this requires a lot of skill with paint. More than a single coat may be required, and even multiple coats may not look pleasing after the paint dries. Dried paint has different optical qualities from wet paint. Again, use pencil to mark out the shapes prior to painting on either inner or outer surface.

The best examples that one can mimic with paint are the Tiffany lamp shades. They are the product of Louis Comfort Tiffany, whose creative forces gave rise to the style that bears his name today. At the time, Tiffany was both an artist and the head of an indoor design company. His investigations of stained glass methods stirred him to such fashions. His creations were renowned for being vibrant, bright and emotive.

For a beginner who wishes to decorate glass shades, the torchiere is a great shape. Frequently torchieres can be found in rooms in need of soothing lighting. There are a number of shapes for torchieres, but perhaps one of the most popular is the cone shape. Torchieres come in many hues and sizes. Get the measurements of the radius on wide side for the size and also on the opposite side where the fitter connects.

For the more advanced hobbyist, the hurricane and gas styles are good examples of more complicated shapes. The hurricane style is characterized by a height that exceeds the width, not unlike the shape of a classic flower vase. It is good for cathedral ceilings that can accommodate the high, slender profile of the hurricane style. One other fascinating shade is the historical gas style that became lauded in the time of Queen Victorias reign. The period observed the spread of gas power gas lights and the consequent proliferation in number of consumers and producers.
