During our honeymoon in Bali a few months back, we came across a local merchant who hand made spectacular table lamps lighting bases. Mind you there was not lamp shade, just the base and the electrical wiring as meager at best, but the base itself was astounding. We always look for local talent wherever we travel but this was the first time we had come across something so exquisite in terms of lamp base designs.
We were so taken aback by the experience and the find in such an unexpected location that we bought more than we planned to. At the end of it all we have purchased 8 the first day, then we went back and bought four more the next day. There were all sorts, some clay, others silver and some wood, we even bought a pair made form chiseled granite. Amazing!. We found a reasonable shipping agent who handled the logistics for all these beautiful bases. I took tons of pictures so that I could get to work finding the proper lamp shades.
We spent the next to weeks traveling throughout the island, staying in places like Kutta, Seminyak and enjoying hikes up the volcano and spending days on the beach and going offshore diving. Our travel to most parts of the island did not result in us finding the proper lamp shades. So we decided to just enjoy the vacation and tailor make the lamp shades when we returned home.
Let me tell you, at first we almost gave up finding the lamp shades. We looked everywhere. Then a friend of ours recommended we look for it online. We did and managed to find a great place to shop and purchase lamp shades along with other light fixtures.
We ordered it and it arrived very soon after, in fact it arrived the day after we received the lamp bases. It was perfect timing. My husband had the bases sent to an electrician to rewire all the bases and install dimmer and remote receivers. We got everything back two weeks later and put the lamp shades on which, by the way, were a perfect fit.
We were so happy with the lamps and the lamp shades and it is a conversation piece with every guest hat comes to visit.
