My porch leads straight to my deck overlooking the garden and then from there you can see the outer banks of Cape Hatteras. My grandparents built this home when they got married and it has been in my family ever since. From the time I was a kid, as far back as I can recall, we always came here for Thanksgiving, the odd thing was that I recall always seeing new furniture, sometimes even the deck would be new and, new light fixtures and sometime even new plants outside. To me grandma’s was a magical place.
It wasn’t till I grew a little older when I realized my grandparent’s place – well my place, now, was in the path of the summer hurricanes that tear through North Carolina every year. It finally occurred to me why every year a lot of things would be new, because the summer before the time we visited at least one of the hurricanes would have torn through and ripped the house. My grandparents’ would then spend the entire fall, fixing it up and replacing a bunch of things.
The one thing that almost always got replaced was the deck out back, the BBQ pit, and all the light fixtures out back. The first year my father inherited the house he decided to refurbish the house and keep it as a summer home. We all chipped in to get the place spruced up. I did the garden, while my older brother did the pendant lighting. My mum suggested we place pendant lighting all around the house every ten feet.
As always, mom’s ideas were always superb. That first night after my brother installed it, the out door pendant lighting looked fabulous. The pendant lighting that we hung along the side of the house had an unintended consequence. There was a ten-foot overhang of the roof and sine the area was nicely lit with all these outdoor pendant lights, we suddenly had all this space that was a wonderful place to hang out on those warm summer nights.
The later we stayed the cooler the breeze got, we could tell what time it was with how brisk the wind would get and how much the lights would start swinging. The outdoor pendant had to be replaced after this years hurricane and is now replaced with outdoor wall sconce. I was hesitant to take it down because all these lights have so much memories with them.
So my wife an d I decided to refurbish these weather beaten outdoor pendant and hang them in the enclosed patio out back.
