Nearly all kids begin to take swimming lessons when they are about three years old. The following are some tips on making this endeavor of learning how to swim an enjoyable experience:
Preparing You & Your Child For Your Upcoming Swim Classes: A good investment would be a water proof bag for your swimming supplies. You should pack this bag ahead of time with a towel, your swimsuit, cap, goggles, and clothes to change into at the end of class.
Sometimes it can be difficult to put a swim cap on a child’s head, if this is the case, apply some talcum powder to the inside of the swim cap and spread it around, before slipping the cap on your child’s head. Ensure that the swim goggles fit snugly, but not overly tight. A child will not be comfortable in the water if they are shivering continuously. To counteract this, apply Vaseline to your child’s extremities to help them stay warm. This should allow the shivering to subside. If this strategy does not work, you may need to purchase a swimsuit that is made to contain warmth.
Prior to your child’s swimming lesson, food should be avoided for a minimum of 1 to 2 hours.
Your child may or may not be permitted to use a flotation device in their class, you should check with your instructor about their rules. One school of thought is that the arm floaties give a child a false feeling that they are safe. It is believed that children become too dependent on them and will be unable to adjust to swimming without them when they are removed.
Don’t pressure your child too much while they are in their swim lesson. Each child is different and develops at a different pace. If the teacher is making you unhappy in some way, you should speak with them or their direct supervisor. The teacher may appreciate some feedback from you also, even if it is constructive criticism. Practice patience and always encourage your child. Try not to push them too hard and maintain realistic expectations. There are usually levels for swim classes and children are often learning at different levels. As they improve and master skills they will move through the levels. You should not press your child’s teacher to move them to the next level. You should trust the teacher’s opinion and it will be easier for all involved parties.
I enjoy the beach and visit with my kids quite a bit,but I have also learned the importance of teaching your kids to swim. Giving them a good swimming foundation will give you a piece of mind when your around any body of water. I enjoy writing on all types topics including childrens life jacket and outdoor security light. Be safe and enjoy!
