Equal Rites Book Review:

Equal Rites is the third DiscWorld novel by Terry Pratchett, published in 1987. It is the first in the series where the previous main character Rincewind does not appear. Instead, Equal Rites introduces the character Granny Weatherwax, who will later re-appear in several Discworld novels as one the Lancre witches that counterbalancing the wizards of Ankh-Morpork's Unseen University.

However, the story does begin with a wizard named Drum Billet who goes in search of his successor, an eighth son of an eighth son who is supposedly about to be born in Lancre. Like the seventh son of a seventh son in our regular 'mundane' world, an eighth son of an eighth son on the Discworld portends mystical gifts and powers.

As fate would have it, the baby defies destiny by being born as a girl, baptized as Eskarina Smith, or Esk for short.. (Ultrasound has yet to be invented on the Discworld so who could have known?) However, the dying old wizard Billet is too late in discovering his grave error and has no choice but to give the baby girl his staff, including its powers.

As Ask becomes a young lady, her Granny (Ms. Wheatherwax) travels to Ankh-Morpork with hr in the hopes that the wizards at the Unseen University can teach her young protege to manage and control her exceptional powers.

The only problem with that, of course, is that Unseen University is strictly a male institution. Females students have never been allowed. In fact, a female wizard is hitherto unheard of on the entire DiscWorld.

After gaining entrance to Unseen University through the "back door" as a servant girl, Ask befriends a young and equally powerful wizard named Simon. Together, the couple go on an adventure to the Dungeon Dimensions, and in the process discover (or develop) an entirely new form of magic never before seen on the DiscWorld.
