Plot Summary
As a young man, Mort was proving a disappintment to his farming family, seemingly inept and unable to carry on the family trade. Mort was too much of a thinking man.

So one day, Mort's father took him to a local hiring fair to try and find an apprenticeship for his son that would better suit his skills. The entire day passes at the fair without any success. But just before midnight, a man clad in a black cloak, mounted on a white horse, and scythe in hand, stops by and says he's looking for a young man to help him in his work. The man is Death, and he chooses Mort as his apprenice and assigns him the task of ushering souls onto the great beyond.

Mort performs his work dutifully, up until it comes time to escort a pricess across. Becoming infatuated with the princess, Mort instead saves her life. But of course, Death cannot be cheated, only delayed. So the princess and Mort are forced to consult with a wizard for help in staving off the inevitable. Meanwhile, their defiance of fate is creating ripples in the reality of Discworld.

In the course of performing his duties as Death's assistant, Mort begins to emulate his master. Whereas Death is moving in teh other direction, longing to become more human, and travelling to the city of Ankh-Morpork in an attempt to experience human life and emotion. In the end Mort must face Death in a duel for his freedom. Death wins the duel but takes pity on Mort and decides to set him free.

In the end, Mort marries Death's adopted daughter Ysabell. (This couple laer have a daughter named Susan, who becomes a regular cast member in the Discworld novels. But that's another story.)
